William de Morgan Vintage Tile
We were the 'house framer' for 31 Fournier Street, which was owned by longtime Spitalfields resident Rodney Archer (1940 - 2015) who was the creator of its unique collections, interiors and atmosphere. In early 2016 the former curator of the house exhibitions, Trevor Newton, and ourselves chose thirty-one of Rodney's tile collection to frame in a selling exhibition at no.31. The tiles dated from 1895 to 1905 and most featured Art Nouveau designs.
This example, which sold immediately, features a William de Morgan (1839 - 1917) tile. It is mounted on a pale grey board in a poplar wood box frame with 20mm matching hand cut spacers. The moulding used is a flat 13 x 37mm, and the frame was finished and painted by hand. This frame is painted with Studio Green by Farrow & Ball, and it measures 215 x 215mm overall. The second and third photographs show the tile on display at 31 Fournier Street during the exhibition along with a few others.
We still have a few tiles remaining from 2016 which were in storage. We are again offering them for sale and they can be viewed at our studio in Spitalfields by appointment. You can see the tiles on this page
