Framed Original Art Nouveau Tiles
We were the 'house framer' for 31 Fournier Street, which was owned by longtime Spitalfields resident Rodney Archer (1940 - 2015) who was the creator of its unique collections, interiors and atmosphere. In 2016 the splendid collection of period ceramics he built up over the years was sold.
In that year the former curator of the house, Trevor Newton, and ourselves selected thirty-one of the very best vintage tiles from the house and offered them for sale in specially created hand painted box frames. The tiles dated from 1895 to 1905 and most feature Art Nouveau designs.
We currently have only three tiles remaining from the original thirty-one shown in that exhibition. Having been held in storage, we are again offering them for sale and they can be seen above. These lovely tiles can be viewed, by appointment, at our studio in Spitalfields. The individual box frames are all hand finished and painted using Farrow & Ball colours and are priced at £140.00 each inclusive.
The reverse of each framed tile features a characteristically cheerful portrait of Rodney with one of his much loved cats taken by Spitalfields based photographer Lucinda Douglas-Menzies with a label authenticating each tile as having formed part of the collection at 31 Fournier Street and signed by Trevor Newton. The frames are all 215 x 215mm in size. You can also see a William de Morgan tile from the original exhibition in our Gallery.
