Pastel on coloured paper
This expressive drawing is by Myles Tonks (1890 - 1960) who was the son of the well known artist and former surgeon Henry Tonks (1862 - 1937). Tonks senior taught drawing at the Slade School of Art, and among his pupils were David Bomberg, William Orpen and Gwen and Augustus John.
This drawing was already window mounted in a double thickness museum grade board, however the paper has cockled badly which would allow the delicate surface to touch the glass when framed. The solution was to use a box frame, with a 6mm spacer, which will prevent this from happening. The wood used for this frame is American White Oak in a 15 x 32mm profile, which has been hand finished in its natural colour. The glass used is conservation grade, with 99% UV protection, to help preserve the drawing from light damage. The size of the frame is 642 x 422mm overall.
