Vintage Engraving of David Hume
Vintage engraving, after Hume's portrait by Ramsay. Frame size: 410 x 340mm
This fine print of the Scottish philosopher is window mounted, the Conservation board has been 'aged' by applying a series of watercolour washes. This particular oak moulding was chosen as it is of a type which would have been used in Hume's day. The wood has been darkened and traces of gold added around the edges. The gold was then rubbed back to give the appearance of age and finally the frame was treated with a tinted wax. In the past gold slips were sometimes used as spacers in order to protect the print by keeping the glass away from the surfact of the paper. This method has been used here. Since the print is old, already brittle through light damage, Conservation glazing was used on this frame.
