Vintage Tiles: 31 From 31Fournier Street
We were the 'house framer' for 31 Fournier Street, which was owned by longtime Spitalfields resident Rodney Archer (1940 - 2015) who was the creator of its unique collections, interiors and atmosphere. The wonderful collection of period ceramics he built up over the years was sold in 2016.
In that year, with the former curator of the house, Trevor Newton, we selected thirty-one of the very best vintage tiles and offered them for sale in specially created hand painted box frames. These tiles date from 1895 to 1905 and most feature Art Nouveau designs.
The reverse of each framed tile features a characteristically cheerful portrait of Rodney with one of his much loved cats taken by Spitalfields based photographer Lucinda Douglas-Menzies. Also included is a label authenticating each tile as having formed part of the collection at 31 Fournier Street and signed by Trevor Newton. Most of the tiles are 153 x 153mm in size and the poplar wood moulding profile used for the frames measures 13 x 37mm. The overall frame size is 215 x 215mm. The tiles are securely mounted onto conservation board and each frame has matching hand cut 20mm spacers.
From the 2016 exhibition we have only four tiles remaining from the original thirty-one. Held in storage, we are again offering them for sale and they can be seen in the slide show above. These tiles can now be viewed at our studio in Spitalfields. The individual box frames are all hand finished and painted using Farrow & Ball colours and are priced at £135.00 each inclusive.
